Why Publish an eZine?

On the Internet, it is very possible to make money
without selling any product. One way of doing so is
through starting your own eZine, also known as an
electronic newsletter.

Visit mine, Rim Digest eZine at http://www.rimdigest.com
which will celebrate TEN YEARS with me as its editor
on February 10, 2010!

rim

In a nutshell, you send out your eZine issues
on a periodical basis to your subscribers.

The good part is that you have flexibility in automating
the process of sending out your eZine issues for you
or manually sending them on a periodical basis.

I send Rim Digest eZine out on Thursdays and have
only missed having TWO issues go out on time!

This is 52 weeks a year for almost ten years.

As an eZine publisher, not only can you easily achieve
the benefits a conventional newsletter publisher enjoys
without having to chop down several trees in the process,
you can easily and conveniently spread your marketing
influence and expertise to your base of subscribers
from the convenience of your computer.

In other words, you do not have to invest in expensive
printing equipment, a brick and mortar business, and hiring
staff just to run your own newsletter publication, resulting
in a lot of time, money and effort saved.

Basically, all you need to start your own eZine are
an auto responder and a list of people interested in
your information, knowledge, advice, tips and other
content that you provide in your eZine.

All in all, if you do not have your own product
or products to sell, publishing your own online
newsletter can be one of the wisest decisions
you will ever make, given the benefits of
impressive marketing power and influence it
can offer to you.

I love doing my eZine and some of my subcribers
are like my other family! Some of them have been
with me the entire time I have published!

Finding The Right Home Business Model

Finding the right home business model on the Internet
may or may not be a lot of work. There is no surefire
way to make money, but that doesn’t mean people will
stop trying.

People are finding ways to experiment with new
strategies and are trying to find business models that
actually work for what they need.

The answer is really a no-brainer : If it
doesn’t work, fix it. If your business model is not
working for you, change it. If you are not seeing the
profits you should from your current model, it is time
to change things.

Many businesses have gone through this sort of
change. With more and more people conducting
business over the Internet and more people using
mainstream media, it is only smart to change what no
longer works.

If the tires on your car won’t get you to where you
need to go, then it is obvious that they should
be changed.

Slow sales and slower uptake of online offerings have
forced many companies to focus on their core
competencies.

Companies are now aggressively marketing their services
to companies who need streaming media. Now many businesses
have taken their focus off of hard advertising and are
focusing on media advertising.

They were forced to change their business models or
could have suffered greatly, some even risking
going out of business.

It is very important to have a good business model set
up when going into business for yourself. Learn from
the biggest and most profitable companies.

The Evolution of Home Based Business Models

The development of business models has a brief
history. The oldest, most basic business model is the
shopkeeper model.

This involves setting up a store in a location where
customers are likely to be and displaying your
product or service for all the passer-bys to see.

Here is mine, Jan’s Country Discout Store, that I
am trying to sell out:

http://tallenta.my-ehost.com/country_store.php

Over the years, business models have evolved,
changed and become more sophisticated.

The bait and hook business model was introduced in the
early 20th century. This model involved offering a
basic service for a low cost, often at a loss.

This part is the bait. Then by charging compensatory
recurring amounts for refills or other products or
services, this is the hook.

Examples are the razor, which is the bait, and blades,
which are the hook, cell phones that are the bait and
the service charges and airtime that are the hook.

In the 1950’s new business models came from some of
today’s well-known companies like McDonald’s and
Toyota.

In the 1960’s, Wal-Mart was the innovator and the
1970’s saw new business models from FedEx, Toys R Us,
the 1980’s pushed Blockbuster, Home Depot and many
computer companies to the forefront with their
innovative business models.

In turn, many dot-coms suffered because of their
poorly thought out business models.

Today’s business models depend on how the technology
available is used. Entrepreneurs on the Internet have
also created new models that depend on the emergent of
technology.

Using computer technology, a business has the
advantage of reaching a large amount of customers with
a minimal cost.

Here are MY online stores:

http://www.downmemorylanetreasures.com/

with Tangible items like memorablilia, hard to find and
out of print movies, Barbies and other collector dolls, etc.

and my digital superstore:
http://www.softwarewarrioress.com

selling downloadable software, ebooks, complete digital business
packages with resale rights, master resell rights AND
private label rights.

Here is my best selling digital business in a box!

Managing these online stores is a breeze compared to
a brick and mortar biz and at almost NO COST to run!

Four Basic Components of a Home Business Model

It is essential when starting a new, home-based business
that you plan on every possible thing that could happen.

Not only does this help you reach a goal for the future,
it also helps if you are trying to get financing for your
home-based business.

This important information is what makes up a home
business model. And there are four basic components of
each stage of building a business.

A great business model can only be composed after the
components of each stage have been identified.

The components of a home business model include the
infrastructure. The core components are capabilities
and competencies necessary to execute a company’s
business model.

The partner network is the business alliances which
complement other aspects of the business model and the
value, which is the rationale that makes a business
mutually beneficial for the business as well as for
its customers.

The offering of a home business model is the value
proposition. These are the products and services a
business offers.

In short, it is what the customer gets for what the
customer pays.

A customer can evaluate a company’s value on two broad
dimensions with multiple subsets.

The vendors’ marketing and sales efforts offer a
customer value proposition.

Next come the customers. You need to know who your
target customers are, the target audience for your
business products and services.

The distribution channel is the means by which a company
delivers its goods and services to a customer.

This could be through a simple means as the postal
service or a major trucking company driving your
products across country.

Customer relationship is key in a business model.

I have several businesses, one offline, one both on AND offline and

several online. The basics are the same whether you market on or

offline. I have a brick and mortar store, a home based office where

I offer both offline document creations and Virtual Assistance online.

http://www.tallentagency.com

I also have an online store selling memorabilia, hard to find or out of print movies,

collectors dolls and more here:   http://www.downmemorylanetreasures.com/

and a digital superstore with eBooks, software, ready made businesses TO sell

digitals, resale rights products and more here: http://www.softwarewarrioress.com

Featured Article ( an oldie but hopefully still goodie )

FOCUS VERSUS AFFILIATE PROGRAM OVERLOAD!

As a “newbie” internet marketer, it is so difficult,
it seems, to focus.

We get caught up so easily in first this wonderful sounding
program, and then the next, and so on, to the point where
e meet ourselves coming and going, kind of like in the old
Duncan Donuts commercial!

I did this in my beginning days, and I am talking BIG TIME!
If it sounded good, I knew I could do well with it because
I had enthusiasm and drive and was almost afraid to let one
pass me by.

At one time, with 6 months net marketing experience, I had
153 affiliate programs going! Eek! So many were so “popular”,
I felt like I would be a failure if I admitted they were just
not working out for me, and the others all made SOME commission
or other gain that assured me that if I could figure out what
I was lacking when I promoted them, I could do them justice.

I got lucky in a way I could not see at the time, when I
accidentally over-wrote my entire Netscape message center
while changing my user name from tallent to jtd. All of a
sudden, if the urls to the programs were not already on one
of my banner heavy eye-sore web pages, I had no access to
any of my member info.

I got the brain storm of going to each web site I could
remember the name of and asking for my username and password,
emailing the webmaster or owner of the program.

The 24 who bothered to reply to me became my Main Programs,
and the ones who had done little or nothing came OFF my web
pages to make room for the ones I was planning on really
going to bat for. Well, most of those programs are somewhere
in cyber-space now, but it was a tiny start toward my getting
SOME focus.

I decided then to only join a new program when another one
could pay my way in.

Funny, at first I felt almost torn about all of the “great offers”
I was passing up, but slowly I started to feel less of the prior
urgency and pressure when I had so many things going I was
onstantly trying to join something I had already gotten into
but had forgotten.

About this same time I started experiencing severe burnout.

I had started looking for a “real job” although my husband
and kids insisted they wanted me at home. I am a very frugal
person (actually I consider myself CHEAP but am told this is
not true!) and my kids and I have lived on a tight budget for
most of their lives, so it is not a real necessity for me to
do more than bring in enough income to supplement that of my
“new” husband (of now 21 months). At the urging of my family,
I decided to give it one more month and then was going to admit
that I did not have what it took to make a difference in our
finances by “working” on the net.

I am so very grateful I got the support I needed then because
one week before the month was up, things really started taking
off for me! Prior to July of 1999 when I became an Internet
Marketing Warrioress, my biggest month had been $200 and I was
ecstatic over that. I found the one, that for ME, was THE
turning point in my marketing career and really got me motivated.
{It was Autolink Pro Submission Service}. I made over $1000 with
this ONE program in six weeks and by then had also gained the
experience and the nerve to push what I truly believe in and
ignore the ones that do not personally fire ME up.

I still have way too many programs that all bring in a steady,
though small income, but I feel they pay for the time they take
up to promote by allowing me to afford to focus on the ones I
really love and have the most success with.

I also still jump on the occasional program that just sounds
like something I cannot live without, but now I make sure my
other ones can “pay my way in” to the ones that require a fee.

With a big old falling down country house, a still “pretty new”
hubby, a married daughter and a son-in-law, an almost 13 year
old son with ADHD and the baby girl who jut turned 8, I have
a reasonably full plate to start out with.

Mix with that a home based desk top publishing agency,
an internet and “live” health services and products business,
an internet employment and bizopp presence, my Newbies911
discussion list and publishing Rim Digest, and you come up
with the perfect recipe for CHAOS, so now it is not at all hard
for me to remember that to take care of everything and everyone,
my best advice for anyone comes in handy for me, too…

Do what you love and you can love what you do.
List your priorities and deal with things as you can.
And when it all seems like too much, take a break,
look at the total picture and …FOCUS

I am running out of time, court for my first of three
credit card law-suits is December 10 and I have to
have started the filing for my bankruptcy by that date.

I have the paperwork finally all together and the retainer
for the lawyer was paid and then the rest was put on hold
because of the massive kitchen damage and my leaking roof-
I have put the fund raiser on a back burner because the
amount I need for the roof and kitchen is HUGE.

I am managing to make my house payment, my poor old 2003
Ford Focus payment ( 5 year loan will be paid off in
January 2009! ) the electric bill for both home and store
and the phone bills, both personal & business but cannot
accumulate the funds to pay my BK attorney.

I have a little over 30 days to get the BK filed and need
$1600 to do so. I have created a widget for this fund:

How to Start An Online Business-
Ways to Promote Your Business Online
On A Shoestring Budget

So you’ve decided to start your own online business.

Wonderful. How are you going to get people to the website
that you’ve slaved away at? You’re going to have to advertise.

What? Advertise? I don’t have the money to advertise.
I started this business to make money, not spend it.

Don’t worry my friend, there are plenty of ways to promote
your business online without spending a lot of money to do so.
However, a lot of these ways require a lot of work, so be
prepared to spend a lot of time to make these ways work.

1. Twitter.

Yes, I’ve listed twitter first. It’s totally awesome.
Basically you go on twitter and post updates about what
you’re doing. You’re limited to 140 characters here so
you have to be succinct when you post. Invite your
friends from other networks to follow you and you’re
in business. Be sure to balance your business posts
with some personal ones so you don’t get labeled a
spammer. Twitter is awesome because you instantly
get results.  People either respond or they don’t.

I highly recommend that you start promoting yourself
on twitter before you use any other method.

2. Myspace.

Myspace is another good place to promote your business
if you’re working on a small budget. When you sign up
for a myspace account you get a blog to post in.

They also have a classifieds section. You can post ads
to promote your business on the classifieds section.

3. Podcasts

Basically a podcast is nothing more than a radio station
that’s available on the Internet. A podcaster records
audio and then puts the audio online so a listener can
download the audio and listen to it later. Many podcasts
listeners listen to podcasts on their mp3 player or on
their computer.

Advertising in podcasts is a good idea because you already know
that the listener is interested in the topic related to whatever
it is you’re selling. Podcast listeners are also fiercely loyal.
They’re not as likely to fast forward past the commercial or
switch channels like people that watch TV.

You can advertise frugally in podcasts in a number of ways.

You can purchase ad space directly from the podcast.
Obviously the prices will vary depending on how popular
the podcast is. You could also get free promotion by
agreeing to be interviewed in a podcast as a guest
expert in whatever your area of expertise is.

You can also create your own podcast centered around
whatever your area of expertise is. Just be sure that
you mention your website in every recording somewhere.

4. Facebook

Facebook is another excellent way to promote your business
if you’re working with a small budget. It will take more
time to see results with Facebook since most people seem
to use Facebook more for leisure than business purposes.

The thing that’s unique about Facebook is the Fan application.

You can create a page for your business and ask your clients
and friends to become “fans” of your business. This is another
group of people that you can safely promote your business to
without being accused of being a spammer. Once again, you want
to make sure to invite everyone that you’re friends with on
other networks to follow you here.

5. Articles

You can also promote your business online using articles.

The way this works is that you write an informative article
related to your area of expertise. At the end of your article,
you include a resource box with your website, a call to action,
and a freebie to entice people to come to your website.

It’s best to place these articles on article directory
sites with high traffic such as ezinearticles.com

These are just a few ways to advertise your business online
without spending a lot of money. Keep in mind that these

One of my testimonials from a satisfied client:

Jan –

I want to thank you for coming to my rescue the other night
when I was about to launch my new POSITIVITYMasterMind.com
website! I really wanted to get it up that night but I also
knew I had worked on it too long to find do my own proofreading!

Then I remembered YOU!  I DM’d you on Twitter — you responded
almost instantly — and very shortly thereafter you provided me
with a list of corrections I needed — BING BANG BOOM  I was up
and running!

You are a ROCK STAR and I ADORE working with you! Your charges
for your service are extremely reasonable but more importantly –
You always have a bright and helpful attitude and we all know
that is PRICELESS! : )

Well, after 7 years of working probably ten times harder
than they are MEANT to work, my old HP desktop finally
bit the dust. I had spent the past four years upgrading
to the point that I could have easily gotten TWO new
computers if I were not so stubborn and “frugal”.

So even though I am in the midst of now cold weather
and still needing to raise funds to fix my roof and
kitchen, my LIVELIHOOD was at stake so I *bit the bullet*
as they say and got a new one. I got a GREAT deal
and after the irritation of learning a new pc and
trying to get the apps, etc. I needed onto IT, we
are getting along just fine, my NEW pc and me, lol.

And the best part is that within 24 hours I had
recovered 1/3 of the cost of the new one already
which I would have LOST if I had waited! One was
a time sensitive solo pack and the delay of a few
days would have lost me the ad sale so I can say
this cute, streamlined eMachine is alreayd paying
for itself.

How to Start An Online Business

Maybe you’ve lost your job.  Maybe you’re suddenly single with
small children and your former spouse was the breadwinner.
Maybe you’ve just experienced a hurricane and now you need
a new roof. Whatever the case, you’ve decided to take the
plunge and start a business online. Here are some things
to think about before you jump into the mix.

1.  Do I have the discipline to run my own business?

When you run your own business, there are no bosses around
to remind you of deadlines. You have no supervisors looming
over your head to keep you on task. There’s no accounting
department watching what you spend. You don’t have
a marketing department handling the advertising.

You essentially run all the departments. When you are
your own boss you have to have the discipline to keep
working on your business even though other fun things
are going on. You have to learn how to manage your time
differently than you did before you were running a business.

2.   What type of business do I want to start?

There are so many different kinds of businesses to start.

You can be a coach, you can be a freelance writer, you can
be a virtual assistant. You could open your own eBay store.
You could open a store selling info products.

The possibilities are literally endless.

You have to decided what you’re most passionate about and what
will be the most profitable. The way to determine what is the
most profitable is to do research. If you’re opening a store
on eBay, you can go to eBay and look at their reports on what
the hot sellers are. You can also research trends by going to
Google Trends. Just go to google and type in google trends.

If you have an idea for a certain niche, you can type that
word in. If you don’t have a clue you can just browse the
trends that google has listed for hot trends.

Another way to research trends is to frequent forums.

Just go to google and type in (your niche) + forum.
Just replace the words (your niche) with the market
that you’re trying to reach. Spend some time reading
the posts on these forums. Post a survey. Forums are
a great way to see what the market wants because the
people you are trying to reach are already gathered
in one place. You can see what their needs and wants
are easily. Also after you’ve started your business,
you can use the forums to promote your business.

3.  How am I going to promote my business?

This is another extremely important thing to have in place
before you start your business. A lot of times entrepreneurs
get excited and throw up a website and then wonder why they
don’t have any sales. You need to decide on what your
marketing plan is going to be before you start your business.

Are you going to rely on online networking? Are you going to
write articles for reprint on other people’s sites? Are you
going to have a blog (an online journal)? It’s important to
have your plan outlined before you start your business.

Starting an online business is an excellent way to generate
income for your family. Be sure to plan your venture before
you get started. Here’s to your successful online business!

Feedback

Hi Jan,

Great issue. I just have a couple of suggestions
that I think will help MWT look better.

The Marketing Warrioress header/banner I would put
at the top as the first thing and then start the issue.

As for where your name and pic are, I would move down
the name or put the name and pic side by side in a table.

However, I do think you did a great job overall
and so many publishers just send junk and just
want to sell instead of helping someone.

Well, I did it. Not only did I get the very first issue
of TAG, or Tallent Agency Gazzette out to my 25 subscribers
on Tuesday but I bit the bullet, as they say, and sent out
the first issue of MWT, or Marketing Warrioress Tips on
Wednesday. Rim will still be a Thursday issue, TAG is
planned to be a Tuesday one and MWT will be sporadic until
I get past 11 subscribers and then I imagine it will go
out on Saturdays. Eventually MWT will replace Rim Digest
ezine which has no mention of marketing or me in its name.

Feel more than free to sign up for one or the other or both:
mailto:jan@tallentagency.com for TAG and / or MWT.

The first issue of either or both can be sent to you by

Search Engine Friendly Pages

There is no point in building a website unless there are
visitors coming in. A major source of traffic for most
sites is search engines like Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Altavista
and so on. By designing a search engine friendly site,
you will be able to rank easily in search engines and
obtain more visitors.

Major search engines use programs called crawlers or robots
to index websites to list on their search result pages.
They follow links to a page, read the content of the page
and record it in their own database, pulling up the listing
as people search for it.

To make your site index easily, avoid using frames on your
website. Frames will only confuse search engine robots and
they might even abandon your site because of that. Also,
frames make it difficult for users to bookmark a specific
page on your site without using long, complicated scripts.

Do not present important information in Flash movies or in
images. Search engine robots can only read text on your
source code so if you present important words in Flash
movies and images rather than textual form, your search
engine ranking will be affected dramatically.

Use meta tags accordingly on each and every page of your
site so that search engine robots know at first glance
what that particular page is about and whether or not to
index it. By using meta tags, you are making the search
engine robot’s job easier so they will crawl and index
your site more frequently.

Stop using wrong HTML tags like <font> to style your page.
Use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) instead because they are
more effective and efficient. By using CSS, you can
eliminate redundant HTML tags and make your pages
much lighter and faster to load.

First of all, you may be wondering at my *brand* or *handle*
of the Marketing Warrioress. Well, ten years ago in June of
1998, when I started marketing on the internet, there were
very few females as yet in the “territory” and I knew I
wanted to make a statement of sorts about this when I was
amidst my fellow marketers and affiliates. I was invited
to join a then brand new group called the Warriors, which,
of course, was almost all male members and decided that if
I were to be a Female Warrior I would distinguish myself
AS a female and so coined the nickname WarriorESS.

I LOVE all aspects of my working on the net, from being the
editor of now THREE ezines, to selling digital products
and complete business sites to market them with:
http://www.softwarewarrioress.com

to selling for a choice few other marketers, as an affiliate
to make commissions, to selling Memorabilia treasures,
Classic and Out of Print Movies and Collectible Dolls, etc.:
http://www.downmemorylanetreasures.com

to my first online AND offline business, Tallent Agency DTP
and Office Services: http://www.tallentagency.com where
I am newly offering Virtual Assistance, or VA, services

and last but not least, my true love, doing ezines!

To date I have: Rim Digest ezine, where I will celebrate
nine years as the editor on February 10, 2009 AND
the Tallent Agency Gazzette, or TAG, newly started in
October of 2008 and this one, MWT, for Marketing
Warrioress Tips. I may add more or drop one or ?
who knows, lol? But I truly LOVE both doing the ezines
and editing and / or proof reading for others who write
ezines, articles, blogs, web sites, reports, ebooks and
so much more.  :-)

I was named one of the Top 50 Most Powerful
& Influential Women in Social Media!

Featured Article

So, you want to try your hand at being an Internet Marketer

I, for one, applaud your decision and will try to be of as
much help as I possibly can. Ten years ago, with a home
based Desk Top Publishing or Office Services business, I
decided to go on the net and see if I could find more
potential clients for my business cards, flyers, brochures,
address labels, resumes, etc. I found a few customers by
joining what were then called “safe lists” or groups of
people who joined mailing lists to send each other their
offers. This was before SPAM became so prevalent that we
could barely get OUT our email offers.

I found a few “make money from home on your computer”
offers that *sounded almost too good to be true*, so, of
course, WERE. I fell for some scams and got introduced to
yet another form of cheating and conning those vulnerable
enough to fall for them but also luckily found a few good
and honest money makers and my world of being an internet
marketer was begun.

I have a great store of tips of what TO do and what NOT
to do and will share them as this ezine and web site
progress but wanted to start out with some GEMS I was given
when I asked my over 800 twitter followers to send me THEIR
best tip for internet marketing and these will start out my
list of tips. They are all easy to understand and really
very useful, so with no more chatter, here they are:

#1: Build the relationship first when possible
TodaysMiracles at http://twitter.com/TodaysMiracles

This is my credo. Before we even heard the term “Social
Marketing” I was eager to get to know and interact with my
customers, fellow marketers and after year one of marketing
on the net, my ezine subscribers ( to Rim Digest ezine:
http://www.rimdigest.com which will celebrate its ninth
year anniversary of my being editor on February 10, 2009!)

#2: Stay focused on one project at a time and follow
a formula through to the end. Finish the project.
YvonneLyon at http://twitter.com/YvonneLyon

This is an EXCELLENT tip! I even wrote an article on this
subject – one of my very first – 8 years ago! I had joined
every affiliate/commission program I could find, trying to
do the ezine, still filling office service orders and
literally meeting myself coming and going and having a hard
time getting ANYTHING done! I had to weed out all but my
most favorite and successful affiliate offers, stick to
doing what I loved and could *flow* once getting into and
it made a world of difference in my production!

#3: Sell to yourself first. That is, leave no doubt
in your mind about the value of your product/service.
Then market. Conviction is contagious.
Blair Warren at http://twitter.com/blairwarren

This is priceless! You have to BELIEVE in your product or
service and if so, work is NOT really work AND your
potential customer or client will see YOUR faith in your
offer and feel it along with you! Blair is one of my
favorite twitter followers who has the wit and intelligence
to make everything he offers worth sitting up and listening
to and I am honored to be his friend. He also made the list
of the 50 Most Influential Men in Social Marketing
http://tinyurl.com/6lzzpl

and we are QUITE proud of Sir Blair :-)

#4: Be guided by your creativity, not your pocketbook.
Don’t fall for pricey gimmicks…be true to your brand.
Donna L. Johnson at http://twitter.com/SpeakingDiva

Very good point and pretty self explanatory.

#5: It’s not about you. It’s not about the product.
It’s not about the price. It’s not about anything
else but what clients want.
John Thomas at http://twitter.com/Nailholes

Yes, this is so true. Put the customer’s needs ahead
of anything else and you will both benefit.

Well, there are hundreds of worthwhile tips and lessons
in this wonderful world of internet marketing but these
are, I thought, the best lead ins to the other ideas I
will be sharing with you.
